Five Tips for Out-of-Work Contractors

01 June 2017

by

The contract world is competitive, fast-paced and awash with opportunity, as long as you know how to navigate it. The only problem lies in the temporary nature of this market – if you aren’t quick to the draw, you miss the target. Here are our five top tips to remedy a lapse in employment:

1. Review your CV

Quality contract CVs tend to be skills-led, getting to the point succinctly for maximum effect. Rather than discussing personal attributes and future goals, present a cross-section of projects and your successes in each. This will demonstrate experience for a wide range of positions.

2. Enlist an experienced contract recruiter

Find a consultant that recruits in your specialism and build a solid relationship with them. They are your key to the market’s most exclusive positions – it’s that simple.

3. Follow-up after interview

If you keep missing out on work, you need to know where you’re going wrong. Call up your recruiter and ask for specific feedback on your application. It could be as simple as adjusting your interview technique!

4. Be a consummate professional

It goes without saying, but even as a contract employee, you need to be an example to all. Treat every job with respect, no matter whether the work or culture isn’t ideal. You never know who you might impress in the process.

5. Get references

Word-of-mouth is a great way to gain new contracts, and the best recommendations come from satisfied clients. Where you’ve been particularly impactful, ask for a testimonial to add legitimacy to your next application.
